A Modern Take on an 1850s Convent

A Modern Take on an 1850s Convent

When a young couple takes on a house with history, the challenge is always the same: how to make it their own without losing what makes it special. This 1850s former convent already had so much presence, soaring ceilings, original panelling, and tall windows that carried light into every corner. What it needed was a careful balance: respecting the architectural details while layering in the couple’s modern style.

Working alongside JMC Studios and the homeowners, we set out to create a home that honoured its past but with a more modern approach. Every decision was about balance, making sure the character of the building stayed intact while giving the couple a space that reflected their personality and future plans.

Keeping Character, Adding Personality

The starting point was colour. James from JMC Studios led the colour consultation, and together we studied the building’s features to find a palette that would stay true to the house while feeling fresh and current.

  • Jetty on the woodwork gave weight and definition, highlighting original details.
  • Swan River on the walls lifted the living room, pulling focus to two remarkable windows.
  • In the study, Bobeche on the walls paired with yellow joinery, bringing warmth and a cheerful energy. This space was designed with flexibility in mind, a functional study today, but able to transition into a nursery in time.
  • In the kitchen, Floreat created a lovely tonal balance with the existing green kitchen and Jetty continued on the woodwork.
  • The hallway was kept understated in Ernest and Bàn, an off white shade that allowed the couple’s art to take centre stage.

Bold Choices Upstairs

The couple wanted their bedroom to reflect a braver, more personal approach. Fremantle and Dapper were used to colour-drench the room, with radiators painted to match. Turning a purely functional detail into a deliberate design choice gave the space its edge, bold, modern, but still sympathetic to the period character.

Details like this are what make historic homes liveable today. They allow the past to remain visible, while letting the owners’ personality come through.
